CMS has announced a new name for the Social Security Number Removal Initiative (SSNRI).  This name will be much easier to remember and explain to Medicare beneficiaries as well as providers - New Medicare Card.

If you recall from previous In the Spotlight posts, the goal of this initiative is to “help fight identity theft and safeguard taxpayer dollars” by removing the existing Medicare numbers (based on Social Security Numbers) and issuing new Medicare cards that contain randomly-generated MBI or Medicare Beneficiary Identifier numbers.   Medicare beneficiaries will be issued a new Medicare card starting in April 2018.

CMS has a new homepage that will provide information, going forward, on details pertaining to the New Medicare Card initiative.  This website also includes a helpful tool on talking with Medicare beneficiaries about the new Medicare Card.

There is also a new Provider website that you’ll definitely want to bookmark (bookmark the New Medicare Card homepage as well) and check often so you’re ready for the New Medicare Card rollout beginning April 1, 2018.
