CMS to Make NPI Data Public
The Centers for Medicare
& Medicaid Services (CMS) has recently disclosed a National Provider
Identifier (NPI) database to the public. In accordance with Electronic Freedom
of Information Act Amendments, CMS is disclosing the data via the Internet as
the National
Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). Data will be available in two
forms: a query-only database known as the NPI Registry and a downloadable
file. Both forms are accessible free of charge and will not require user IDs and
passwords. Providers whose information on the NPPES is incorrect will be able to
contact CMS to edit the data. For more information, vist the CMS
NPI web site.
