Starting with the first program that opened in 1974 and looking to the more than 4,100 programs today, hospice care is delivered in a variety of health care settings, including home care, assisted living, skilled facilities and hospitals. Over 1.2 million patients received hospice services in 2005, an increase of over 150,000 people from the year before. (Source: NHPCO, November 2006).
