First Lady Falls
Former First
Lady Nancy Reagan's recent two-night stay in a California hospital again drew
attention to the problem of fall in the home....and the importance of
prevention. Though Mrs. Reagan's doctors agreed that the results of all
tests were good, the two-night stay emphasized not only the danger falls
represent, but also the direct medical costs.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, fall rates for men and women age 65 and over in the US are steadily climbing, as are deaths, hospitalizations and the percentage of fall victims who will require long-term care. What that means to today's home care agencies is a greater risk of litigation, lost revenues as a result of hospitalization and reduced standing in the community.
