Choosing an Online Purchasing Tool

In today’s competitive business world, the need for cost savings and just-in-time delivery often leads to outsourcing. The implementation of e-commerce solutions to facilitate B2B exchanges creates an efficiency that was not available in the past. When a new vendor solicits your business, do you ask if they have an online solution? You should, and here’s why:

  • Online tools allow you to serve your residents more quickly.
  • Staff time is utilized more efficiently.
  • Storing enormous amounts of product is eliminated.
  • Staying current with regulations is achieved through tracking tools.
  • Online education is more efficient and cost effective.

Now that you know your vendor has an e-commerce tool, does it fit your needs? It is important to realize that very few online solutions will have every aspect of what you are looking for. In fact, you should be wary of anyone who claims to “have it all”. It is better to work with a company who stays within their niche and provides you with a well designed and tested application. You would be wise to avoid companies trying to implement every business module and failing to excel at any one part.

When looking at an online solution, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Does it solve the most pressing issues I currently have with purchasing or fulfillment?
  • Can I maintain basic aspects of this application myself?
  • Are their different levels of security for different levels of staff?
  • Can I add-on or modify if my needs change?
  • Is the capacity available to store order history and possibly data – depending on your needs?
  • Can this application interact with other systems I have in place or may be implementing in the future?
  • Is there adequate support for me and my staff?
  • Will the application grow with the changing needs of my facility?

Once you’ve answered the questions above, you’ll have a better understanding of what a vendor has to offer and if it’s the right solution for you. No matter what your needs are, an online solution will help your organization become more streamlined and efficient, allowing you to better serve your residents.
