Properly Investigate Resident Incidents with Karen Merk at AAHSA

DES MOINES, IA (October 31, 2006)
- Briggs Corporation, a leader in Senior Care documentation systems, is proud to announce that Karen Merk, RN, BS, CRNAC, a clinical documentation expert, will speak on how to properly investigate resident incidents, next Tuesday, November 7, at 3pm during a long-term care seminar at the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) tradeshow in San Francisco, California. Mrs. Merk will explain the necessary steps toward properly investigating resident incidents to protect organizations from costly litigation.

Karen will be teaching on the importance of staff education and proper documentation in facilities, and she will also be available after the presentation to discuss further questions regarding risk management and investigation documentation. Briggs Corporation is teaming up with GuideOne’s Long-Term Care Risk Manager, Linda L. Williams, RN, BSN, for this event as well. 

Karen Merk has previously served as the Director of Nursing in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) and as a clinical case manager for a 40 bed sub-acute unit. She is a Certified Registered Nurse Assessment Coordinator and received her BS from the University of St. Francis. Merk currently teaches the Certified Registered Nurse Assessment Coordinators course throughout the United States. She is an active participant and regularly attends the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Skilled Nursing Facility open door forums in Washington, DC. Karen Merk has participated in many peer review opportunities for CMS. Her expertise is in assisting long-term care facilities with documentation and staff education. She has written many articles for publications such as Nursing Home Magazine and provided quotes for Long-Term Care magazines. Merk is also the co-director for the Iowa Person Directed Care Coalition.

Linda Williams with GuideOne Insurance has previously served as a Director of Nursing in a CCRC as well, and as a nurse consultant for two corporations with numerous long-term care facilities in Iowa. She has a BSN from The University of Iowa and is currently enrolled in a MPA program at Drake University. Her expertise is in assisting long-term care facilities with state, federal and OSHA regulation compliance issues, as well as staff management, education and development.
